Each recipe page notes common occasions. For example, Korovai is often baked for weddings, while Okroshka is popular in summer. Check the "Region & Occasion" section on each recipe page.
What does "difficulty level" mean?
Difficulty is a quick guide to time and technique. Easy uses basic kitchen skills, medium takes more steps, and hard requires more time or practice.
What are prep time and cook time?
Prep time covers chopping and mixing. Cook time covers stove or oven time. Some recipes like Kvas include fermentation time under cook time.

Where can I find the ingredients?
Most ingredients are available at regular grocery stores. For specialty items, try international markets or online shops that carry Eastern European foods.
Can I substitute ingredients?
Yes, but the flavor may change. Aim for the closest match. For example, Greek yogurt can stand in for smetana (Russian sour cream).
Are the cooking times accurate?
Times are estimates. Stoves, ovens, and ingredients vary. Use the doneness cues in the instructions rather than relying only on the clock.
